Jutter blogisode two - Building a world

For the past months every Wednesday we have been having meetings to realize our ambitious long-form animation project “Jutter”. In this episode, we go into the first steps of realizing a part of the world for a “proof of concept” in order to sell the film. To learn more about the general vision for the project view our previous blog Jutter blogisode one - Start of an adventure.

Proof of concept

Environment

In order to realize the project, we decided to first make a proof of concept. In this proof of concept, we will hand build one miniature set and do a scene with both the main characters. In this environment, you can see the inner world of the character visualized. His obsession with collecting precious artifacts has caused him to neglect his environment and himself.

In the bowels of his spaceship, the captain has been up for several days trying to interpret ancient maps. Some incomplete others could be fake. A strong alcoholic smell fills the room, a fresh batch of liquor has been distilling in the corner. Canned food and pornographic magazines cover his desk. Schroot his robot companion keeps bringing him items to play with. He is restless and hasn’t been getting a lot of attention for the last couple of days. The captain is so close to connecting all the dots. He has all the ingredients but can not find the recipe.

Characters

We’ve been working on the character models of “Aad” the captain and his canine companion “Schroot”. They will be the two main characters in the film. The character models will get the same handcrafted look as the environments. Imperfections and fingerprints on their skin will make them blend with the environments.

This is an early model of the captain based on a clay sculpture. In the next stage the model will be textured and rigged. Tattoo’s of his past adventures and future missions will cover his body. The Prostetic limbs are made by the captain himself and take the place of where is arm and leg once were, a sacrifice he made.

We are also working on the model of “Schroot” an energetic dog created by the captain from spare parts to help find valuable artifacts. He is equipped with various handy tools and sophisticated devices in order to help the captain on his adventures.

In the next blogisode we will go into the development of the story and the characters. Thanks for reading!
